In regards to your question about the Tactrix 1.3U (http://tunertools.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TAC-OpenPort1.3U) cable working on a 1996 GST Eclipse, this is an issue of software, not the hardware and according to the forums at www.OpenECU.org (http://www.openecu.org/) it is supposed to work. The list of supported vehicles is here at this link (http://openecu.org/index.php?title=EcuFlash:VehicleSupport) and it states that it works on all 2nd Gen 1996-???
In the forums here at this link (http://openecu.org/index.php?title=Forums), you can get more specific & expert assistance, but we only sell the cables. We do not provide any technical support for the software or for any specific use and any particular vehicle.

Just a little more information and details on the Tactrix cable (http://tunertools.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TAC-OpenPort1.3U). The OpenECU will only relflash the plastic "black cap" ecus on some of the 98-99 DSMs. There have been some swaps on the older cars to these ecus as well as the Evo8 ecu.

Some information can be found here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/tuning-engine-management/338754-first-flashed-dsm-ecu-98-99-flashing-faq.html This has a lot of detail regarding which ECUs are supported, some information on swaping ecus as well as instructions and rom info. The 95 and 96 cars have an inverted crank angle sensor (CAS) which may require some sensor swaps to work with the newer ECU as well. It's looking like in order to for the cable and software to support reflashing you will need to source and swap one of the supported ECUs along with possibly some sensor and additional swaps. (Also, if you have a 6 bolt swap, or any non-95/96 swap, the CAS should be fine on the newer ECU.) I would suggest some research into which ECU and setup you have and what parts you can/are willing to change to make everything compatiable/reflashable.
