    The Innovate OpenTune™ OBD-II / CAN Interface

Gather and analyze all the critical performance data from any car made since 1996.

The new OpenTune OBD-II / MTS interface from Innovate Motorsports allows high speed data logging from the factory computer of any car, truck, and SUV made since 1996, and integrates with Innovate air/fuel meters and other modular tuning system (MTS) components. Prior to OpenTune, critical data was collected from isolated systems and was nearly impossible to synchronize to get a clear picture of how the car was performing. More and more people are tuning their late-model cars, trucks, or SUVs, and need a tool that offers full scanning and diagnostic capabilities. The Innovate OpenTune system offers just that, combining affordability and ease of use with professional-quality data rates, parameter selections, and analysis capabilities.
Modern car computers are connected to hundreds of complex sensors. OpenTune “opens” the door of these complex engine management computers, providing unprecedented access to data being measured directly by these sensors. Users can select up to 16 channels from hundreds of available data streams, and log the data 12 times per second. Users can also record up to 28 conditions, states, and codes as “status” channels, and even reset check engine lights and other trouble codes.

    • Select and log any 16 of hundreds of available parameters.
    • “Fast packet” logging (12 samples/second on all channels) for fully-synchronous high-speed data.
    • Includes industry-leading LogWorks engine analysis software with user-customizable skins
    • Real time horsepower and torque calculators.
    • Fully compliant with the Innovate Modular Tuning System (MTS). Log directly into LogWorks or into a DL-32, while integrating wideband air/fuel ratio sensors, accelerometers, thermocouples, etc.
    • Display and clear any trouble codes.
    • Display live data on Innovate XD-16 gauges or LogWorks PC application (included).
Since many top tuners already use Innovate Motorsports tools, the OpenTune system allows customers and tuners to collaborate with one another by exchanging log files directly from Logworks. OpenTune works on every vehicle manufactured since 1996, making it the first high-speed scanner/logger for many makes, including Subaru*, Chrysler*, Mitsubishi*, Honda*, Toyota*, and Nissan*, as well as being the most powerful and affordable scanner available for Ford* and GM* applications.
When Innovate released the first affordable pro-quality wideband O2 kits in 2003, tuners started to realize the value of having timely and accurate vehicle data to analyze. Back then many people didn’t even know what Air/Fuel Ratio was, but now few serious enthusiasts would tune without it. The same is true for a multitude of other critical performance parameters, such as ignition timing, transmission temperatures, coolant temperatures, vehicle speed, mass air flow, intake air temperature, etc.
If you are considering using a Superchips*, Edge*, Hypertech* or other “chip tuner” to replace your stock tune with a canned tune, you should consider data acquisition. With the Innovate OpenTune system, you can log very detailed data prior to making any modifications. Then, after modifying, you log additional data and compare. This allows you to see what’s being changed, by how much, if the changes are safe for your engine, and where you might find room for additional improvement.
Most late-model cars and light trucks do not have a wideband oxygen sensor, but they DO have about 100 other sensors that gather very useful information. Instead of duplicating these sensors externally, the OpenTune interface allows you to directly access these existing sensors. The OT-1 is a fully-compliant Innovate MTS device, so it can drive XD-16 gauges, log to DL-32 recorders, and integrate fully-synchronous data with Innovate widebands and other sensor controllers.
    Fully integrated engine performance data!

Just had this question from a customer of ours:

"Hi I am having problems with the install of the ot-1. I have a dodge dakota r/t 2000. It will not recognise my vehicle, I have tried switching to selecting the protocall and none of them worked either. Any Ideas?"

First, with everything connected and the key on, pull the OBD2 connector out of the connection port, wait a couple seconds and plug it back in.

We've been seeing a number of connectivity problems and this clears 90% of them. There are a few other connectivity issues as well with these initial OpenTune units, but if this does not clear it, we'll need to get Innovate tech support to assist.

    Response, from the customer:

"Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your help. I signed up for the forum but it won't let me post if you would please post the following ramblings it might help some one, or motivate innovate to work on a fix.
Looks like there are several issues going on. I did see it work for a while at least, hopefully innovate will have some upgrade to their software.

I found I had to specify the protocol, then un-plug it from the truck and computer, plug it back into the truck reboot the computer then with the key on plug it back into the computer.

Not a quick process, I was hoping to use this as a permanent install but this is way too much work for everyday use!

I thought it might be the old laptop I was using so I tried to use a new laptop running XP, that didn't work it saw the OT-1 as a Microsoft track ball! It wouldn't let me change the drivers either. I went back to the older laptop that I had it working on this time the LogWorks software wouldn't find com 4 the USB port, after 3 more cycles of shut everything down and restart it finally saw com 4 and I was able to get 1 data log, only 3 hours later!

After 5 min the laptop shut down ( a power saving measure) it did not see the logging as activity, started it right back up but there was no connection, tried the whole process 3 time with no luck, gave up almost 4 hours into it for a 5 min log, but at least I have a massive headache now. LOL"

    Tim,
While we're awaiting response from the folks over at Innovate Motorsports, the head developer for Edge Data Pro software (who is working on supporting the OT-1 OpenTune & Innovate MTS data stream) provides this advice for something to try and which should solve the connection problems between the laptop and the OT-1.

Let's force the laptop to put the OT-1 OpenTune on either com port 1 or com port 2. When we get into the device manager, if it's already set to com port 1, switch it to com port 2 and vice a verca.

    • First plug everything in and turn on the ignition so it's all powered up.
    • Second, go to your control panel, then System, then Device Manager.
    • Third, under ports look for your OT-1 device. Note that it might be labeled as a usb to serial adaptor.
    • Double click that item, go to "Advanced" and switch the com port as noted above.
    • Do not switch between even/even or odd/odd numbers, ie if it's currently on com port 1, switch it to 2 not 3. If it's currently set to com port 2, switch it to 1 and not 4.

Save these settings, try it again and let me know the results, here in the forums if you can.
    Cheers,
    Lloyd

I'm interested in the Innovate OT-1 and read over the write up and saw the different ways that it could be displayed. By the write up it shows that the information can be displayed several different ways. I was wondering if the information could be displayed onto a 7" lcd monitor or not. Thanks

So long as you have a windows machine driving the LCD display, then yes you can display OT-1 data on it without a problem.
Download the Logworks software and try it out on your display. If you don't care for the way Logworks runs on the display, another popular options (still requiring Windows) is the Dash Command software used with an Elmscan or OBDLink scan tool

If your windows unit happens to support Wifi, you can also use the newer
OT-2 which is compatible with any Wifi device
